Benedictine life calls for a balanced rhythm alternating alone time, silence, and stillness with communal time, discussion, and action. Benedictine wisdom may offer each of us tools for these COVID times. Throughout this morning session Fr. Martin, Fr. Holding Loss in the Light
Thursday, January 14th
6:30pm -7:30pm
Zoom Link
Throughout the past year, we have each experienced grief in our own way. Some have lost jobs, homes, food security, family members, friends, relationships, routines, rituals, traditions, a sense of security, and beyond. We continue to grapple with long-existing systems of injustice that have created pain and hardship across generations. Each person's experience of this moment is unique, yet we all carry grief. This Thursday, we gather to hold this grief in the light, to let God's grace shine upon it, and to unite as a community to hold space together. Priory's Campus Ministry and Counseling Department will host a short reflection/vigil prayer service in concert with practical counseling tips for this time of grief, uncertainty, and change. If interested in attending over Zoom, please RSVP on this Google Form.
Living Lent: Seeking Desert Wisdom
Monday, February 8th (9am - Noon)
Zoom Room
Deserts often seem barren, vast, unforgiving, daunting, lonely, even deadly yet spiritual people throughout time have sought desert life as a way to deepen their connection with God and others. Throughout Lent, Christians remember the forty days Jesus spent in the desert preparing himself and his relationship with God for his ministry and public life.
There is much we can learn from time in the desert. This past year has felt like a bit of a desert, barren, vast, unforgiving, daunting, lonely, deadly yet our time in the desert has offered time for perspectives and habits to shift. In some cases, amidst the desert of 2020, we found wisdom. This year’s mini Lenten Retreat will include talks from Fr. Martin, Fr. Matthew, and Molly Buccola as well as reflective discussions and individual time to process and pray. If interested in joining, please RSVP here.

Easter’s Grace: Transition and Transformation
Monday, April 12th (9am - Noon)
Zoom Link
Easter is a time of transformation, new life, a time when we remember Jesus rising from the dead to continue his presence among us in a new way. Our lives are cyclical, full of mini births and small deaths, new beginnings and slight endings. This cycle which we remember throughout the Easter Season is one that isn’t contained to this time of year or to church life. The process occurs in nature, friendships, interests, habits, professional projects, even family phases. Throughout this retreat Fr. Martin, Fr. Matthew, and Molly Buccola will give talks on Easter, a time of resurrection, new life, transformation, and will invite participants to explore meaning in their own lives through group conversation and individual reflection. 2019 - 2020
Lenten Reflection Series with Dr. Don Carroll
Priory's Founders Hall
7:00 PM
Wednesday, March 4
Wednesday, March 11
Wednesday, March 18
Wednesday, March 25
How blessed are we all to have this incredible four-week Lenten Series in our future. Once again our dear friend Don Carroll, a retired attorney and law professor who has had an avocation in Scripture since he left St Patrick's Seminary in 1960, will be sharing his wisdom and insight. Please join us for discussion, sharing of experiences and of course the Priory's famous cookies.
This 4 week Lenten Series will explore the subject of "Mercy". Does Mercy improve our image of God as so often a God of terrible judgment? May the teachings of the Church (the "rules") find room for Mercy, or does Mercy weaken the teachings (such as those regarding marriage, divorce, sexuality, etc.)? This is the question at the heart of the internal dispute in the Church in reaction to Pope Francis. We will explore this issue using a deeper probing into Jesus' Parable of the Prodigal Son (perhaps better known as the Parable of the Prodigal Father). Attendees will be invited to participate in a way designed to help us see ourselves in the roles of Prodigal Son, the "good" elder son, and yes, even the Father. Might it not be a good present-to-self for this Easter to understand ourselves in all three roles!
Hope to see you all! Please let us know if you are able to make the series and please feel free to join us even if you are only able to make one or two evenings.

Explore the Passion Narratives
Lenten Scripture Series with Don Carroll
Wednesdays: March 13, 20, 27, April 3
Fr. Christopher Room
Priory School
7:00 PM
“Seeking to know better who Jesus is for ourselves, our Lenten Scripture Series will study the Passion Narratives in the four Gospels. We will look at the original intent of the four Evangelists. There are three very different, even radically different, images of Jesus from Mark/Matthew through Luke to John. These differences are rich in meaning for our personal Gethsemane-Like experiences, those life-altering or even life-threatening experiences of ourselves and loved ones. Further, we are aware that we are “broken” in many ways, large and small, and probably will ever be so. We will see Jesus take that brokenness with him to the Cross with the result that
our brokenness is not the last word for us.”
Lucky us to have Don (our community member and friend) leading our discussions once again.
Don is a recipient of the St. Thomas More Award.
Don has had an avocation in scripture since his seminary days.

If you are interested in singing for the Vespers service, contact Mary Carroll at [email protected]. You do not need to be a professional singer...just someone who wants to pray through song! The choir is comprised of church community members, friends, musicians, and, hopefully this year, school community members! We rehearse December 8th, 13th and 15th from 7-9pm in the chapel. Benedictine Humility in a World Demanding Perfection
Thursday, October 13th (9:30am -7:30pm)
Off Campus
St. Benedict believed humility unites us with the rest of our human race. As one grows in humility one grows in love that ultimately casts out fear. Thus humility doesn’t weigh us down, but liberates and lifts us. It invites openness for giving and receiving grace. St. Benedict begins with the inner attitudes then deals with outward behavior. Throughout this retreat, we will explore St. Benedict’s invitation to be honest with our abilities, our humanity, and ourselves so that we can rejoice in our perfectly imperfect selves. We will spend the day listening to talks, sharing stories, and reflecting with a variety of prayerful activities. If interested in joining, please click on: RSVP Benedictine Humility in a World Demanding Perfection.
Conversation with Author of The Spiritual Child
Monday, October 17th (7pm – 8:30pm)
Fr. Christopher Room
Priory School
NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller, USA TODAY Bestseller, Publishers Weekly Bestseller
In The Spiritual Child, psychologist Lisa Miller presents the next big idea in psychology: the science and the power of spirituality. She explains the clear, scientific link between spirituality and health and shows that children who have a positive, active relationship to spirituality:
* Are 40% less likely to use and abuse substances
* are 60% less likely to be depressed as teenagers
* are 80% less likely to have dangerous or unprotected sex
* have significantly more positive markers for thriving including an increased sense of meaning and purpose, and high levels of academic success.
Combining cutting-edge research with broad anecdotal evidence from her work as a clinical psychologist to illustrate just how invaluable spirituality is to a child's mental and physical health, Miller translates these findings into practical advice for parents, giving them concrete ways to develop and encourage their children's-as well as their own-well-being. In this provocative, conversation-starting book, Dr. Miller presents us with a pioneering new way to think about parenting our modern youth.

If interested in joining, please RSVP here.
